I truly believe I am doing what I love to do. It’s nice to be able to make art that people can use as well as enjoy. Something I really enjoy about art, is watching people admire the finished work; seeing their surprise and approval is wonderful! As well as it being therapeutic to me, I just am not one to be able to sit around and do nothing. I have to be doing something and art takes that place perfectly.
I am a long time resident of the North. I was raised up in Aklavik, but returned to the Fort Smith area later on in life. I guess northern living is where I learned a lot of the traditional arts. My father used to hunt and trap, and my mother was always busy sewing. I started making things at a young age, fixing holes in mukluks and such, and from there it progressed until I was making things myself. I’ll say there was a bit of a learning curve, but overall I believe it to be an every-day practical form of art. When you need some mitts, you go ahead and make some!
I create a wide range of things. I make mitts, and fur lined mitts. I also create jewelry from semi-precious stones – real stones too. I enjoy knitting things like hats, scarves, and other fun things. I have my own little room at home where I keep all of my art things. When I’m working on something and get tired, I spin my chair around and start on another project. I’m almost always working on new pieces, whenever I have the time. It’s something that I really enjoy right now, and as commissions and orders are growing - I think I’ll be busy for a while yet.
